At SmileKids! Pediatric Dentistry, we focus on preventive care. Our goal is to ensure that your children avoid common dental health issues like cavities and gum disease. Together, we can give your children a solid foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.
Routine dental visits allow us to assess your child’s oral health and track the development of your teeth. In addition, we’ll be able to remove plaque and bacteria from their teeth, and identify signs of potential oral health issues like gum disease and cavities. With routine dental visits and good at-home oral care, your child can avoid tooth decay and other common oral health issues, saving you both time and money.
At-home oral care is the most important part of preventing cavities. Your child should brush twice a day for at least two minutes, ideally in the mornings and evenings, and floss once per day. Proper nutrition, such as minimizing sugary drinks and sugary or starchy snacks, will also help keep their teeth healthy.
At your child’s dental visit, Dr. Nadgie will first review the patient’s medical history, perform a clinical examination of your child’s mouth, and determine the need for prescribing x-rays or if the use of DEXIS CariVu, a radiation-free imaging tool, would be appropriate to check for cavities. With this information Dr. Nadgie will then discuss the patient’s overall oral health with you and your child and present any necessary treatment plan to address or improve your child’s dental health.
Our goal is to educate both you and your child about at-home oral care, proper nutrition, and how to care for your child’s teeth more effectively.
Fluoride treatments help remineralize and strengthen your child’s teeth, and fight back against tooth decay. The treatment takes only a few minutes, and can be performed as part of any routine teeth cleaning and oral exam at SmileKids! Pediatric Dentistry.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid treatment that can be applied directly to cavities to halt their progression, as an alternative to a filling. While it is very effective, this treatment is usually only recommended for baby teeth, as it stains the area black permanently.
Dental sealants consist of a transparent dental resin that is applied directly to your child’s teeth, and hardened with a dental curing light to create a powerful barrier that protects the enamel from decay. With proper placement, sealants can prevent cavities for up to 5 years.
Gum disease is relatively rare in kids, but it can still affect them if proper oral care routines are not followed. The first stage is gingivitis, which causes no permanent damage to their teeth. Symptoms of gingivitis typically consist of swollen and discolored gums, sensitive gums, halitosis (bad breath) and gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing.
If left untreated, this can progress to periodontitis, which is not reversible. Symptoms of this include gum recession, tooth sensitivity, a foul taste in the mouth, fever, sores in the mouth, and even loose teeth in extreme cases.
It’s essential to care for your child’s teeth properly to avoid gum disease. If you think your child has gingivitis or periodontitis, get help from Dr. Nadgie at SmileKids! Pediatric Dentistry right away.
